Digital Connections and Social Media

The shift in the paradigm of digital connections and social media

I am sitting here this Sunday and took a look around at my 2 sons and myself and I realized just how connected we and others are connected to "smart devices".  TV, computer, I phone, Kindle.  I took a quick inventory on the how many connections the whole family had this weekend. Yesterday started with me and my Kindle reading "Risky is the new safe" by Randy Gage (fantastic book by the way, a must read for everyone and should be a required class in all schools).
I then worked on my laptop..wireless.  Checked my I Phone for email, bank account and credit card.  watched a show that was streamed to my xbox from netflix. Checked twitter and facebook on both my laptop and I Phone and then back to the Kindle for more reading.how many time was I "connected".....13 times throughout the day!! My 9 year old has an I Touch and my 4 year old loves to play on the laptop "PBSkids.com"  My wife was on the laptop 3 times and her I Phone more than 5 times and uses her Kindle.  All of this would not be possible without the internet and wireless connections.  The shift on a digital connect has increased more than 500% from 5 years ago.

There is a huge shift to connecting to others due to this paradigm shift.  The world is changing because of the way we now communicate with each other.  20 years ago knowing someone in China was rare if you were from the US.  Now you can play games or face time each other anywhere instantly.

Online Advertising

We are using this connection to advertise ourselves and businesses now around the world instantly. Ordering online is as easy as a few clicks (we just ordered lunch online). Advertising to the person has been more and more popular even for the giants like at&t, walmart, Target, all the automakers and even internet providers.
This has been used so much that it now has turn to adspam.  Everywhere you turn there is some kind of advertising, banners, commercials you need to watch before you can even access the website you clicked on.  This shift is now going to personalized content and those ads are no longer working like they did 5 years ago.  The change of what people want is happening so quickly that we need to start looking ahead and stop looking at what worked yesterday. What worked yesterday will not work tomorrow. Take for instance Twitter.  I stopped using twitter for a long time because of everyone posting a link and a comment like

or "I am an expert on this or that and for only xx.xx you can sign up 4 my program". the training on Social Media was when and how many times to post a day, not about what people really want.......

Real Content

Content would be described as information  and experiences that may provide value for person on the receiving end.   "The brain is hungry not for method but for content, especially content which contains generalizations that are powerful, precise, and explicit" ---Fredrick Turner.

So how do we use our digital connection and social media to grow our business? Write post, tweets, blogs with the best content you have available. Stop posting stuff like "I ate a hotdog today!" or "Check this out!" That is not the content people are looking for.  They want something that will pull and hold their curiosity.  The key word is HOLD.  If you get someone to your site, post, blog,  real content will hold and keep their interest and keep them coming back for more.  The more they come back the more they will want what you offer (if it is a benefit to them).
